North Island Seychelles

The island of North, in Seychelles is a small island of granite origin, of 2.01 km², 5 km north of Silhouette. In 2003, 11 guest houses were built as a tourist resource. North was one of the first known Seychelles islands. An expedition in 1609 by Alexander Sharpeigh of the British East India Company reported that the island had a large population of giant land tortoises. From 1826 to the 1970s, the island belonged to the Beaufond family of Reunion. During this time the island was a plantation of fruits and spices. It also produced guano, fish oil, and copra. When the plantation was sold in the 1970s, the island fell into disuse, spreading wild animals and foreign weeds. Lately the native species of flora and fauna of Seychelles are being reintroduced and alien species being removed to return the island to its primitive state.
